SEPA Deposit Pending: How to Trace a Missing EUR Transfer
A SEPA transfer left your bank but has not appeared on the exchange. Diagnose name mismatches, wrong IBANs, references, weekends and compliance holds in the right order.

When a euro transfer has left your bank but is not visible on the exchange, the useful question is not simply “where is my money?” It is: at which stage did the transfer stop? A SEPA deposit can be pending at the sending bank, between banks, at the exchange's payment partner or during compliance review.
Work through the checks below in order. Repeating the transfer before locating the first one can create a second problem.
Step 1: identify Standard or Instant SEPA
SEPA Instant is designed to settle rapidly, but both banks and the receiving payment partner must support it. Standard SEPA moves on banking days and can be delayed by cut-off times, weekends and public holidays. The OKX cash-deposit guidance notes that some bank transfers can take up to five business days depending on the method and bank.
Check your bank receipt for the scheme used. Do not assume that selecting “urgent” automatically created an Instant SEPA transfer.
Step 2: compare every beneficiary field
Open the exchange deposit instructions and compare them with the transfer receipt:
| Field | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Beneficiary name | Exact payment partner or account name shown at deposit time |
| IBAN | Every character, including country prefix |
| BIC | If your bank required one |
| Reference | Personal reference, if the platform supplied it |
| Sender name | Must match the verified exchange account holder |
| Amount | Above any minimum and net of bank fees |
Never reuse an old IBAN from a screenshot or saved beneficiary without checking the current deposit page. Payment partners can change.
Step 3: understand the name-match rule
Transfers from a spouse, employer or business account can be delayed or returned when the exchange account is verified in your personal name. OKX's EEA terms state that the name on the linked bank account must match the verified account name.
Small differences such as a missing middle name may be reviewable; a completely different legal person is a more serious mismatch. Do not alter documents. Ask support what proof is accepted.
Step 4: locate the transfer status
Your banking app may display “sent” while the bank still has not settled the transfer. Request a formal transfer confirmation showing the IBAN, amount, execution date and end-to-end reference. Then check the exchange's cash-deposit history, not only the trading balance.
The evidence package for support should contain:
- transfer receipt or PDF confirmation;
- sending IBAN and receiving IBAN;
- amount, currency and execution time;
- end-to-end reference;
- screenshot of the exchange deposit instructions;
- deposit-history status.
When to contact the bank and when to contact the exchange
Contact the sending bank first when the transfer is pending, rejected or the receiving bank says it has not arrived. Contact the exchange when the bank confirms settlement to the correct IBAN but the deposit is still absent after the displayed processing window.
If you entered a wrong IBAN, ask the bank whether a recall is possible. A recall is a request, not a guaranteed reversal.
Common causes in one decision table
| Symptom | Likely next action |
|---|---|
| Weekend Standard SEPA | Count banking days from the next working day |
| Wrong or old IBAN | Contact the bank immediately about recall |
| Sender name mismatch | Ask the exchange about return or verification |
| Correct transfer, no deposit record | Give support the end-to-end reference |
| Deposit credited but withdrawal blocked | Review any withdrawal hold separately |
A delayed deposit and a withdrawal hold are different issues. EEA terms may allow holds after certain SEPA credits depending on risk controls, so seeing euros in the account does not always mean they are immediately withdrawable.
How to reduce future delays
Create the beneficiary from the live deposit screen, send from your own-name account and test with a small amount. Save the transfer confirmation until the deposit is credited. For cashing out in the other direction, read our crypto-to-bank withdrawal guide and SEPA fee comparison.
FAQ
Does SEPA Instant guarantee an instant exchange credit? No. Bank settlement can be instant while the exchange or payment partner still performs reconciliation and compliance checks.
Should I send another transfer? Not until the first transfer is located or returned.
Can support find a transfer using a screenshot alone? A formal receipt with the end-to-end reference is much more useful.
Risk note: bank-transfer availability, fees and processing rules vary by country and account. Always follow the live deposit instructions shown to you.
