P2P Seller Not Releasing Crypto: What to Do Next

You paid, marked the order as paid, and the seller still has not released the USDT. Here is the evidence to preserve, when to appeal, and what not to do while escrow is active.

P2P Seller Not Releasing Crypto: What to Do Next

P2P dispute flow: payment, escrow and appeal

You sent the payment, selected I have paid, and the seller has not released the crypto. The safest response is not to cancel, pay again or continue on WhatsApp. Keep the order open, preserve evidence inside the platform and use the dispute channel attached to that order.

This guide covers the buyer's side of a delayed P2P release. If your concern is a fake receipt or an off-platform request, start with our guide to seven P2P scams.

First determine what is actually delayed

A P2P order has two separate settlement systems. Your bank or mobile-money provider moves fiat; the exchange holds the seller's crypto in escrow. Marking an order as paid tells the seller to check their real account, but it does not prove that the payment is final.

Before escalating, verify four facts:

  1. The payment status is completed, not pending or reversible.
  2. The recipient name and account match the order instructions.
  3. The exact amount was sent, including any transfer fee.
  4. The order page says you marked the order as paid before its timer expired.

Do not rely on an SMS alone. Open the banking or mobile-money application and save the completed transaction record.

Evidence that makes an appeal easier to resolve

Create a compact evidence package rather than sending ten unrelated screenshots:

  • the order number and amount;
  • the payment timestamp and transaction reference;
  • the payer and recipient names, with unrelated balances hidden;
  • proof that the transfer is completed;
  • the full in-app conversation with the seller;
  • a one-paragraph timeline explaining what happened.

Never publish the seller's account details publicly. Submit evidence only in the order dispute flow or through verified support.

The escalation sequence

Start in the order chat with one factual message: payment reference, amount and time. Then use Need Help or the equivalent option on the order and choose the reason that matches the problem. According to the OKX dispute guide, support may need time to review both parties' responses, and relevant evidence speeds up the process.

Do not open several tickets for the same order. Keep replies in one case so the reviewer sees a complete chronology.

Four actions that can make the situation worse

Action Why it is dangerous
Cancel after paying The order may close while the seller still has your fiat
Pay a second time It creates two transfers for one escrowed order
Move to WhatsApp Off-platform messages may not count as order evidence
Threaten or insult It adds noise and can lead to account restrictions

If the seller asks for an extra payment because the market moved, do not negotiate a new price outside the original order. Use the dispute flow.

What escrow can and cannot do

Escrow prevents the seller from freely moving the crypto while the order is active. It does not reverse a bank transfer, guarantee that every document is genuine or replace the payment provider's own investigation. The exchange mediates based on the order record and evidence available.

That distinction matters in mobile-money markets. A transfer can appear in a notification before it is final, while a bank transfer can be delayed by business days. The correct response depends on the payment rail, not on the seller's promises.

A safe checklist for your next P2P purchase

  • Choose a merchant with many completed orders and a high completion rate.
  • Read payment terms before placing the order.
  • Send from an account in your verified name.
  • Never mention crypto in the transfer reference unless the order explicitly requires it.
  • Keep all messages inside the order.
  • Start with a smaller amount when using a new merchant.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before appealing? Follow the timer and help options shown on your specific order. Payment methods and regional rules differ; do not use a time quoted for another country as a guarantee.

Can the seller ask me to cancel after payment? Do not cancel until the funds have been conclusively returned to your payment account.

Will support always recover the money? No platform can promise a result in every case. Clear evidence, correct payment details and an active escrow order materially improve the review.
