How to Buy USDT with Mobile Money in Africa (2026)
In West and Central Africa, P2P with mobile money is the main way to buy USDT. Full walkthrough on OKX: escrow, seller selection criteria, real costs in XOF and the traps to avoid.

2026 action checklist
- Choose a merchant with a strong completion history and sufficient order count.
- Keep chat and payment inside the platform escrow flow.
- Release or confirm crypto only after the payment is final in the actual wallet, not from a screenshot.
In Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali or Cameroon, there is no SEPA transfer and card purchases in CFA francs are rarely available. The channel almost everyone uses to buy USDT is P2P (peer-to-peer) trading paid with mobile money: Orange Money, Wave, MTN MoMo or Moov Money. Here is how to do it safely on OKX in 2026.
How P2P actually works
On a P2P market you buy from another user (a merchant), not from the exchange. The platform acts as referee: the seller's USDT is locked in escrow the moment you open the order. You pay the seller via mobile money, they confirm receipt, and the escrow releases the USDT to your account. As long as you stay inside this circuit, the seller cannot take your money and disappear.
Prerequisite: a verified OKX account — registration and KYC take about ten minutes (step-by-step guide) (referral link, code OK6669, 20% fee discount).
Step by step
- In the OKX app, open P2P Trading.
- Choose Buy, asset USDT, and your currency (XOF, XAF, MAD…).
- Filter by payment method: Orange Money, Wave, MTN MoMo…
- Pick a seller (criteria below) and enter the amount.
- The order opens with a countdown: pay exactly the amount shown, through your mobile money app, to the number displayed inside the order.
- Tap I have paid and attach the transaction screenshot.
- The seller confirms; the USDT lands in your Funding account. If your end goal is BTC rather than USDT, the conversion step is covered in buying Bitcoin in francophone Africa.
Picking a good seller: 4 criteria
- Completion rate ≥ 97% with several hundred completed orders.
- Verified merchant badge where available.
- Short average release time (a few minutes).
- A realistic price — an offer well below market is a scam signal, not a bargain.
The classic traps
- Off-platform payment: someone on WhatsApp or Telegram offers a "better rate" outside escrow. This is the number one scam. All payments and confirmations must go through the official P2P order.
- Fake receipts: when selling, never release USDT based on a screenshot; open your own mobile money app and check the actual balance.
- Third-party payers: never accept a payment from an account in a different name than your counterparty — it is the typical pattern of laundering stolen funds through P2P, and can get your account frozen.
- Cancelling after payment: never tap "Cancel" once you have paid; if anything goes wrong, open a dispute (appeal) with your evidence. The full catalogue of schemes is in 7 P2P crypto scams.
What it really costs
OKX charges no commission on P2P for buyers: the cost sits in the spread between the seller's price and the real USDT rate — typically 1–3% in XOF. Compare three or four ads before buying. Your mobile money operator's transfer fee comes on top.
Once you hold USDT, if you need to move it to another service, read which USDT network to choose first — the wrong network often costs more than the entire purchase spread. For longer-term storage decisions, see crypto wallet or exchange.
FAQ
What is the minimum purchase? Each seller sets one; ads from 3,000–5,000 XOF are common. No bank account? The full circuit is in converting CFA francs without a bank.
How long does a purchase take? Usually 5–15 minutes end to end.
Can I sell USDT the same way? Yes — the reverse flow works identically — detailed in withdrawing crypto to your bank account. Verify the money is in your account before releasing, and see our review of OKX itself if you are still choosing a platform.
